Map showing where Transnistria is

What the flag looks like

Horizontal red, green and red bands in a 3:2:3 ratio, with a gold hammer and sickle beneath a gold-edged red star in the upper hoist.

What it means

The design copies the flag of the Soviet-era Moldavian SSR, from which Transnistria broke away; the flag law gives its symbols and colors no official meaning.

How to remember it

Transnistria still flies the Soviet hammer and sickle: gold, under a red star, in the corner of a red flag with a green band across the middle.

Fun facts

  • The reverse of the state flag leaves out the hammer, sickle and star, and anyone except government bodies may fly that plain version instead.
  • The flag of Russia has equal legal status with the state flag in Transnistria.
