Map showing where Oklahoma is

What the flag looks like

A sky blue field with an Osage warrior's buffalo-hide shield decorated with small crosses and hung with seven eagle feathers, crossed by a peace pipe and an olive branch, with "OKLAHOMA" in white below.

What it means

The shield stands for defence, and the Native American peace pipe laid with the European olive branch stands for peace between the two peoples.

How to remember it

Oklahoma hangs a tan Osage shield with dangling eagle feathers on sky blue, crossed by a peace pipe and an olive branch.

Fun facts

  • Oklahoma's first flag, a red field with a white star bearing the number 46, was replaced in 1925, partly because red banners had become linked with communism.
  • The word "OKLAHOMA" was added below the shield in 1941.
