Officially Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya
Locally al-Jamāhīriyya al-ʿArabiyya al-Lībiyya · الجماهيرية العربية الليبية
What the flag looks like
A plain green field with no emblem or other design.
What it means
Green stood for Islam and for Muammar Gaddafi's political philosophy, set out in his "Green Book".
How to remember it
Gaddafi's Libya
flew the simplest national flag ever: nothing but green.
Fun facts
- From 1977 to 2011 it was the only national flag in the world with a single color and no design.
- The rebels of 2011 revived the red-black-green flag with a crescent and star from before Gaddafi's 1969 coup, and it is Libya's flag today.
