What the flag looks like

A white field with two horizontal blue stripes, one near the top and one near the bottom, and a blue Star of David in the center.

What it means

The stripes are modelled on the tallit (Jewish prayer shawl), and the Star of David is a long-standing symbol of Judaism.

How to remember it

Israel is a white flag with two blue stripes like a prayer shawl and a blue Star of David between them.

Fun facts

  • The design was used by the Zionist movement from the late 19th century, including at the First Zionist Congress in 1897.
  • The shore of the Dead Sea, on Israel's eastern border, is the lowest land elevation on Earth, more than 400 meters below sea level.
