Flag of Gunma
Officially Gunma Prefecture
Locally Gunma-ken · 群馬県
What the flag looks like
A white emblem on a purple field: three crescents around 羣, an old form of the kanji 群 (gun).
What it means
The crescents rework the prefectural emblem's three mountains, Akagi, Haruna and Myōgi, into a sign of a growing Gunma; the purple recalls the old culture of Kōzuke Province.
How to remember it
Gunma's
three white crescents on purple began as its three famous mountains; Tokyo's
white emblem on purple is a six-rayed sun.
