Flag of Guadeloupe
Locally Gwadloup
What the flag looks like
An unofficial but widely used local flag: a black field with a large yellow sun in front of green sugarcane, under a blue band across the top bearing three yellow fleurs-de-lis. The official flag is the French tricolor.
What it means
It is based on the coat of arms of the town of Basse-Terre: the fleurs-de-lis are usually taken to stand for France, and the sun and sugarcane for the island's climate and its sugar plantations.
How to remember it
Guadeloupe
is a blazing yellow sun rising out of sugarcane on a black night, with a blue ceiling of three golden fleurs-de-lis.
