What the flag looks like

Two equal horizontal bands of white over red, with a disc set towards the hoist whose colors are reversed: red in the white half and white in the red half.

What it means

The white band is the ice sheet and the red band the ocean; the red half-disc is the sun sinking into the sea, and the white half-disc is icebergs and pack ice.

How to remember it

Greenland is a midnight sun half-sunk in the sea: a white-over-red flag like Poland's, but with a two-tone disc sitting near the pole.

Fun facts

  • It is the only flag in the Nordic countries and their territories without a Nordic cross.
  • Designed by Thue Christiansen, it is called Erfalasorput, "our flag", in Greenlandic.
