Map showing where Easter Island is

What the flag looks like

A white field with a large red reimiro in the center: a crescent-shaped breastplate whose two upturned tips end in carved heads.

What it means

The reimiro is a wooden pectoral ornament once worn by the island's chiefs and nobles, and the heads at its tips represent the ariki, the chiefs.

How to remember it

Easter Island is a big red smile on white: the reimiro breastplate, with a tiny head on each upturned tip.

Fun facts

  • A reimiro flag was flown by the island's king in the 1880s; the modern version was first raised officially beside Chile's flag in 2006.
  • The Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen named it Easter Island because he arrived on Easter Sunday in 1722.
