Map showing where Bosnia and Herzegovina is

What the flag looks like

A blue field with a large yellow right-angled triangle near the fly side, and a diagonal line of white five-pointed stars (seven whole and two halved at the edges) running along its long side.

What it means

The triangle's three points stand for the three constituent peoples (Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs) and roughly echo the country's shape; the stars and blue recall the flag of Europe.

How to remember it

A yellow triangle chased by a diagonal line of white stars that run off the edges: Bosnia's blue flag has no map or arc of stars like Kosovo's.

Fun facts

  • The flag was chosen by the international High Representative, Carlos Westendorp, after local politicians could not agree, and introduced in time for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.
  • The half-stars at the top and bottom are meant to suggest the line of stars continues infinitely.
