Flag of Bermuda
What the flag looks like
A red field with the Union Jack in the upper hoist and, in the fly, the coat of arms of Bermuda: a red lion holding a shield that shows the wreck of a sailing ship on the rocks.
What it means
The shield shows the wreck of the Sea Venture on Bermuda's reefs in 1609, which led to the islands' settlement by the English.
How to remember it
Bermuda
is the British territory in red: a Red Ensign
with a lion holding a shipwreck, where its Caribbean cousins fly blue.
Fun facts
- Bermuda is the only British Overseas Territory to use a Red Ensign, rather than a Blue Ensign, as its main flag.
- The wreck of the Sea Venture shown on the flag is thought to have inspired Shakespeare's The Tempest.
